Tapiwa Musewe is a Canadian-trained Optician and South African-trained Optometrist. She holds a Bachelor of Science from McMaster University and completed the Opticianry program at Georgian College. In 2018, she earned her Optometry degree from the University of Johannesburg. Her diverse educational background and international experience have shaped her commitment to providing inclusive, patient-centered visual healthcare.
Tapiwa’s passion is driven by the urgent global need for accessible eye care. According to the World Health Organization, over 1 billion people suffer from visual impairment, including 5.5 million Canadians. These statistics inspired her to found Kuwona Inc. in 2012—an organization dedicated to building partnerships in the visual healthcare sector, both locally and globally. “Kuwona” means “to see” in Shona, reflecting her roots and mission to prevent avoidable blindness.
In 2024, Kuwona Inc. acquired Draga Vision Care Inc., a well-established optical practice in Hamilton, Ontario. With this milestone, Ms. Musewe became the first Black woman to own an optical practice in the city. Draga Vision Care offers full-scope services including eye exams, contact lens fittings, prescription eyewear, and myopia management.
Since the acquisition, Tapiwa and her team—comprising Optometrists and an Optometric Assistant—have served over 500 patients with high-quality, personalized eye care.
Tapiwa has also emerged as a sought-after keynote speaker, frequently presenting at conferences and community events. Her talks focus on glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Through these engagements, she raises awareness about the critical importance of annual eye exams and early detection.
